CSA Ocean Sciences Inc. (Trinidad) Ltd. has successfully developed and executed a comprehensive Monitoring Program for a major offshore energy operator in the Guyana-Suriname Basin, further strengthening its reputation as a leader in ultra-deepwater (> 1,500 m) environmental assessments.
The Monitoring Program was designed to identify detectable environmental effects associated with offshore oil and gas operations by assessing key physical, chemical, and biological parameters within defined operational areas relative to reference sites and established baseline conditions. Structured as a flexible, adaptive framework, the program provides a toolbox of monitoring approaches aligned with international best practices and is designed to evolve based on monitoring results and operational activities.
To date, the program has included the completion of ultra-deepwater sediment sampling for physicochemical and benthic macroinfaunal analyses, underwater photographic surveys, and water column sampling, including hydrographic profiling and discrete water chemistry measurements. Collectively, these datasets informed baseline surveys, providing a critical reference framework for evaluating potential environmental effects associated with exploration drilling and production activities in ultra-deepwater settings.
Surveys were conducted at depths of approximately 2,500 m by multidisciplinary teams of international, regional, and local marine scientists and offshore operations specialists, resulting in the development of comprehensive environmental baseline datasets that have been accepted by regulators.
This achievement represents a significant technical and operational milestone for the region’s offshore sector and demonstrates the effectiveness of regional collaboration in delivering complex environmental monitoring programs in frontier deepwater environments.
The Monitoring Program is the first program of its kind in the region and leverages CSA’s extensive international experience in deep and ultra-deepwater environmental monitoring, together with strong regional partnerships, regulatory expertise, and regional environmental knowledge. CSA has completed more than 100 environmental field and desktop assessments in water depths exceeding 1,000 m.
Through the successful delivery of surveys associated with the Monitoring Program, CSA reinforces its position as a trusted technical partner for operators navigating the environmental and regulatory challenges of ultra-deepwater offshore development. The program supports informed decision-making, responsible offshore operations, and alignment with international environmental stewardship standards in one of the world’s most active offshore frontiers.
